An East–West dialogue on Spanda, Svātantrya, and William Eastwood’s Field of Probabilities
Alex: I’ve been reading William Eastwood’s The Holographic Universe, and something has been bothering me ever since.
Arjun: What’s that?
Alex: What if the universe isn’t a finished creation? What if reality is being created every single moment, and we’re somehow participating in that creation?
Arjun: That’s fascinating! You know, something very similar has been explored in India for over a thousand years.
Alex: Really? Tell me more.
Arjun: Have you heard of Kashmiri Shaivism?
Alex: Not really.
Arjun: It’s a philosophical tradition that understands consciousness as the fundamental reality behind everything. Not something produced by the universe, but the very source from which the universe manifests.
And there’s a beautiful concept within it called Spanda.
Spanda: The universe is alive with creation
Alex: What’s Spanda?
Arjun: Spanda refers to the subtle, dynamic pulsation of universal consciousness. But don’t imagine a physical vibration. Think of it as the continuous creative activity through which consciousness expresses itself as the universe.
Let me give you an example.
Imagine an ocean with countless waves. Every wave has a different shape, size, and movement. Some rise, others disappear.
But tell me, has any wave ever been separate from the ocean?
Alex: No, every wave is just the ocean taking a particular form.
Arjun: Exactly! Kashmiri Shaivism sees the universe in a similar way. The countless things we experience are expressions of one underlying consciousness.
The forms keep changing, but the consciousness expressing them remains.
Alex: That’s remarkably close to what Eastwood proposes!
He describes physical reality as a holographic projection arising from consciousness. According to his framework, what appears to be a solid, independent universe is actually an ongoing projection from an underlying Field of Probabilities.
Arjun: Interesting. So in his theory, reality isn’t simply created once and then left alone?
Alex: Exactly! He argues that it is continuously projected, with our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and expectations participating in determining what we experience.
Arjun: Then here’s the connection I find extraordinary.
Spanda describes consciousness as inherently dynamic and creative. Eastwood’s framework describes a continuing process through which possibilities become experienced reality.
One speaks in the language of consciousness and its creative pulsation; the other in the language of probabilities and holographic projection.
They may be describing different aspects of a similar fundamental process.
Svātantrya: The freedom to create
Alex: But if consciousness is continuously creating reality, what determines what gets created?
Arjun: That brings us to another fascinating concept: Svātantrya.
In Kashmiri Shaivism, Svātantrya means absolute freedom—the inherent creative freedom of universal consciousness, traditionally called Śiva.
The idea is that consciousness doesn’t require something outside itself to create. Creation is an expression of its own nature.
Alex: So consciousness isn’t just aware of existence. It has the freedom to express existence?
Arjun: Precisely!
And I find this especially beautiful because we spend so much of our lives believing that freedom is something we must acquire from the outside.
We think we’ll be free once we have enough money, achieve a certain position, or receive recognition from others.
But what if freedom is much more fundamental than any of those things?
Alex: Eastwood also emphasizes creative freedom. He argues that our beliefs and expectations shape which possibilities we experience from the Field of Probabilities.
He even suggests that the physical world we encounter is partly an expression of our own inner activity.
Arjun: There’s a powerful connection here.
Svātantrya describes the absolute creative freedom of universal consciousness, while Eastwood explores how individual consciousness participates in creating experience.
Every individual is an artist and creator of their life experiences but ultimately they are much more than that, their true nature is that of whole universe, the whole ocean and their destination is to merge back from being a drop into the ocean, go back from where they came from, go back to the source, go back to the unmanifest.
Alex: So the individual isn’t necessarily the ultimate creator acting separately from everything else?
Arjun: Exactly. Think about the wave again.
The wave moves, but its movement is never separate from the ocean.
Similarly, the freedom of individual consciousness, in Kashmiri Shaivism, must ultimately be understood in relation to the freedom of universal consciousness.
And that makes Eastwood’s idea of our participation in reality especially interesting to explore.
The Field of Probabilities: Are possibilities already present?
Alex: There’s something else Eastwood discusses that fascinates me.
He proposes that our experienced reality is selected from a Field of Probabilities containing possibilities beyond what we currently perceive.
Imagine standing at a crossroads. You could walk left, right, or straight ahead.
You experience only one path, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the other possibilities were meaningless.
Arjun: That’s an interesting way of looking at existence.
In Kashmiri Shaivism, universal consciousness isn’t limited to the particular forms currently appearing before us. Manifestation is understood as an expression of its inexhaustible creative power.
Alex: Then could the Field of Probabilities be Eastwood’s way of describing the potential from which consciousness continually manifests reality?
Arjun: That’s a compelling philosophical interpretation.
What we experience right now may not exhaust what reality is capable of expressing.
Alex: So the present moment might not be a fixed boundary, but one expression of a much greater potential?
Arjun: Exactly. And perhaps that’s why understanding consciousness could be so transformative.
What does this mean for our lives?
Alex: All of this sounds extraordinary, but how does it help someone in everyday life?
Arjun: Let me ask you something.
Imagine a person who has failed several times and now believes, “I’m simply not capable of succeeding.”
What happens when that person begins treating this belief as an absolute truth?
Alex: They might stop trying new things. They may overlook opportunities and interpret every setback as proof that they’re incapable.
Arjun: Exactly. Their understanding of themselves begins shaping their experience.
We spend so much of our lives believing that freedom is something we must acquire from the outside—after we get a job, a promotion, or money. But freedom is an inner state of creative consciousness first. When you change the inner state, the external conditions must shift.
Now imagine they start questioning that belief.
What if the person recognizes that their past experiences don’t necessarily define their future possibilities?
Alex: Their entire approach to life could change.
Arjun: That’s where I find Eastwood’s work especially interesting.
He encourages us to examine the thoughts, beliefs, and expectations through which we participate in our experienced reality.
Kashmiri Shaivism approaches the question from another direction: it invites us to recognize that our deepest identity is not limited to the temporary roles, circumstances, and beliefs with which we identify.
Alex: So both encourage us to question the limitations we’ve accepted about ourselves?
Arjun: Yes, although they explain freedom differently.
And I think that’s worth exploring because so much human suffering is connected with how we understand ourselves.
But imagine the difference it could make if someone stopped seeing their present circumstances as the entirety of who they are.
Alex: Instead of asking, “Why am I trapped in this reality?” they might begin asking, “What possibilities have I not yet explored?”
Arjun: Exactly!
And perhaps that change in perspective is itself the beginning of greater freedom.
The meeting of two worlds
Alex: You know what amazes me?
We’ve been exploring two frameworks developed in completely different times and cultures, yet both place consciousness at the center of existence.
Arjun: And both challenge the assumption that consciousness is merely a passive spectator of a world entirely separate from itself.
Kashmiri Shaivism offers the concepts of Spanda, the dynamic activity of consciousness, and Svātantrya, its absolute creative freedom.
Eastwood offers a contemporary holographic framework in which individual and collective consciousness participate in the continual projection of experienced reality.
Alex: So perhaps the most exciting possibility is bringing these explanations together?
Arjun: Yes! Because everything is connected in this world, underlying everything we all are part of divine consciousness
Alex: So we should encourage people to investigate consciousness for themselves by applying these timeless principles?
Arjun: Precisely.
Because the purpose of exploring consciousness shouldn’t merely be to accumulate more knowledge.
What excites me is the possibility that understanding our own nature might help us live with greater freedom, creativity, and compassion.
And if these ideas can help even one person begin to question a limiting understanding of themselves, wouldn’t that alone make sharing them worthwhile?
Alex: Absolutely.
Then perhaps the question we should leave people with is this:
If consciousness is more fundamental and creative than we’ve imagined, how much of what we consider impossible is actually a limitation of our present understanding?

When I was conducting my first independent research experiments beyond that barrier at age 12, I was operating entirely outside the boundaries of what 1975 orthodoxy could name or comprehend. I was accessing the generative, non-physical framework that the rest of the scientific world was only just beginning to build a vocabulary for.
Stochastic Electrodynamics (SED): Physicists like Timothy Boyer in the 1970s, and later Harold Puthoff, Bernhard Haisch, and Alfonso Rueda, began publishing papers specifically using the phrase Zero Point Field.
I was so incredibly impressed by what I was learning in the 1970s that I decided to conduct an experiment. That initial experiment was such a massive paradigm shift in my life that it led to over 50 years of additional experiments that explored what existed beyond The Zero Point Field (ZPF).
